Butterfly

As a consequence of nature disaster that happened countinously in Sumatra such as tsunami, flood, forest fire and the change of land use (the forest areas) to plantation, settlement and road infrastucture. In addition, the extreme climate change condition causes a negative change in some species and natural vegetation at Sumatra (reduced, damaged or lost). This conditions impact are ecological losses, including vegetation losses for human.

The objectives of this project are :

Butterfly conservation in north part of Sumatra

  • Butterfly eco-tourism development as sosialize and educational media to community
  • Scientific publication about butterfly ecology and biodiversity

To support the butterflies conservation programme we needs:

1) Inventory of butterfly diversity

2) Inventory of butterfly community in relation with habitat types and monitory the vegetation structure in each habitat

3) The complete report and research result

Project beneficiaries:

  • Long lasting butterfly habitat (primarly for rare and endangered catagorized)
  • Community that helped in economy income cause the benefit from selling ecotourism that will developed
  • The local community about the knowledge of butterfly diversity
  • Local goverment, as promote media to introduce the area as eco-tourism
  • Education institute, that conservation areas will be used for butterfly observation and research

Socially, this project will gives the positive impact to local communities for their economy increased and provide to understanding of preserving the good ecological as a part indigenous forest from community that have been passed down from generation to generation. We believe that a goodway conservation will support every facet of life, good nature, people, culture, and economy, including in the field of politics. An example, the successful of conservation will provide insight to policy makers (goverment) to issue policies that support the preservation of the enviroment and ecosystem.

but1Seeing of conservation activities that already exist in the central and southern parts of Sumatra, we beelieve this approach is more realistic to executed. With the support and knowledge, we are optimistic success of the project objectives. (agreement of cooperation in knowledge sharing with two conservation is being executed).

We urgently need the local communities participated to caring and maintaining butterflies breeding and the goverment law protection for this ecotourism for a long term goal. In addition, the countinue of butterflies study and research with scientific community should be countinously to keep the ecotourism long lasting.

but2The butterfly samplings will be conducted in the different habitat by using sweep net along with transect line. The habitat are located inside the forest areas, including agricultural areas, secondary and primary forest and river banks. The surveys will be carried out in certain condition where it is the most favorable times for flight during peak hours (9 am to 3 pm). The specific specimen will be classified for further identification in Entomology laboratory of Museum Zoology Bogoriense (MZB)-LIPI. Butterfly specimens will identified based on Yata (1981), Morishita (1981), Aoki et al. (1982), Tsukada and Nishiyama (1982), and Tsukada (1991). Plants visited by butterfly will documented and recorded of habits, colors, and flower types. Types of flowers will categorized following Faegri & Pijl (1980) to show the vegetation structure composition. By collected the information and the community resources, expected that the people awareness to conservation will increased. The results of implemented activities will be scientifically analyzed and assessed in consultation with the experts from several universities to ensure the knowledge  that can be use as scientific references. National conferences will ensure that all works getting evaluation and supports from multi sectors.

Butterflies play a very important role as pollination some plants in maintaining and conserving ecosystem functions, as key taxon group for many species of parasitic wasp,including the predator arthropod (spiders), birds, small reptiles and many others which depend their life on it. Many butterflies specialize on specific plant species for oviposition or feeding. Consequently, they are very sensitive to changes in floral diversity, vegetation structure, and structural component of the habitat. With this behaviour, butterfly can be used as ecological indicator species for habitat destructions. The rapid destruction of natural habitats may cause the extinction of many species of butterfly, as a consequence the chain food balance will disturbed and the existence of many plants that polinated by butterfly will threatened.

but 3Biodiversity inventory is the first step to provide all information needed to determine the status of species in ecosystem. This conservation will be an model, object and education spot for science community.
